Steward - The Westin Chicago North Shore - Wheeling, IL

Purpose for the Position:  The Steward will facilitate the orderly flow of china, glassware, silver and other related equipment so as to ensure that sufficient quantities of each exist at all times and to maintain a cleanliness standard that is consistent with the goals and standards of the local health department and the hotel.

The Steward Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Ensures that all outlets and banquet areas are sufficiently supplied with all necessary glassware, china, silver and other related equipment.
  2. Learns operation of all ware washing equipment.
  3. Cleans, sanitizes and maintains equipment, kitchen, pantry and storage areas to ensure all company standards as well as local board of health requirements are being met.
  4. Prevents the spoiling and contamination of foods by practicing proper sanitation and complying with hotel policy and health regulations.
  5. Attends monthly department meetings.
  6. Completes projects as determined by the Executive Chef.
  7. Maintains complete MSDS log and conducts periodic training to all staff members.
  8. Inventories and orders all supplies needed to ensure a clean and sanitary work place with clean and spot free china, glass and silver (CGS) products.
  9. Inventories and requests purchase of par level GCS and supplies.
  10. Hires, trains, schedules and evaluates all stewarding personnel within budgetary and business forecasted guidelines.

To do this kind of work, you must be able to:

  • Carry out specific oral or written instructions, frequently following a simple routine.
  • Do the same task over and over, frequently in the same way.
  • Communicate successfully with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Stand and walk for long periods of time.
  • Lift and carry items such as trays of dishes.
  • Use hands and fingers skillfully and easily.
  • Be available on nights, weekends and holidays.

Physical Demands:  Lifting 50 lbs. maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 lbs.  Requires walking or standing to a significant degree, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, hearing, feeling.

Environmental Conditions:  Inside:  Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.  A job is considered "inside" if the worker spends approximately 75% or more of the time inside.

Extremes of Heat Plus Temperature Changes:

Extremes of Heat:  Temperature sufficiently high to cause marked bodily discomfort unless the worker is provided with exceptional protection.

Temperature Changes:  Variations in temperature which are sufficiently marked and abrupt to cause noticeable bodily reactions.

Math Skills:  Requires mathematical development sufficient to be able to:  Add and subtract.

Language Skills:  Must have developed English language skills to be able to:  Read at a minimum level.

Relationships to Data, People and Things:

Data:  Comparing:  Judging the readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

People:  Serving:  Attending to the needs, requests or the expressed or implicit wishes of people.  Immediate response is involved.

Things:  Handling:  Using body members hand tools, and/or special devices to work, move or carry objects or materials.  Involves little or no latitude for judgment with regard to attainment of standards or in selection appropriate tool, object or material.

Specific Vocational Preparation:  Specific vocational training includes an occupationally significant combination of:  vocational education, apprentice training, in-plant training, on-the-job training, or essential experience in less responsible jobs which lead to the higher job or serving in other jobs; anything beyond short demonstration up to and including 30 days.
